Modelling Monday No.02. "More horrors from the 3D Printer" - 009-00-0-16.5

Well it’s been a while since I wrote one of these!

It’s still my plan for these posts to become a regular part of this blog, so hopefully I can convince myself to document more of my modelling projects. First up a look at my latest 0-16.5 project….

o1.jpg

I’ve been asked a lot recently if I’d consider making some 0-16.5 kits. The above is the test build of my first kit in this scale. A kerr Stuart side tank based on a Skylark. It’s designed to fit the readily available Electrotren 0-6-0 chassis. I would like to modify the chassis so it’s an 0-4-2, making it more like the prototype. Perhaps a project for a future blog post! If you are interested in this kit it can be found for sale here.

I’ve been bitten by the “light trailway” bug! A few weeks back I stumbled on the files for a kit of a Y6 tram. I think I downloaded this from Thingiverse but I’ve been unable to find it on there. The kit was for 0 gauge but I rescaled it down to 00.

The original model didn’t come with an interior so I knocked something up in Sketchup. I plan to use a Tenshodo/Hanazono motor-bogie to power it. Upon finishing the model I decided I needed somewhere to run it. My mind quickly went to building a freelance light railway terminus and since then I’ve slowly been assembling a collection of suitable models for that project.

The next loco I built for the light railway/tramway layout was the above Beyer Peacock tram. The file for the body was produced by Teebee on Shapeways (some more of his designs feature later in this pos). The orignal model was designed for 009 and is based on the tank engines used on the Welshpool & Llanfair light railway in Wales. I modified the model by adding tram skirts, buffers and the cow catcher from the Y6 file. Again, I plan to use a Tenshodo/Hanazono motor-bogie to power it.

I had thought about making one of the skirted class 04s to go with the Y6, and I do plan to eventually. But in the meantime I modified one of my 009 designs and the above “creation” was born. It’s loosely based on a Hudswell Clarke diesel. Little work was needed to modify it from 009 to 00 as it was already a large model. It’s currently undergoing a strip down and repaint.

An early idea for the layout was to add a branch line that serves some sort of industry. It was around this early stage of planning that Thingiverse user “JayWizzleHizzle “ uploaded an updated version of his “Port Of Par” twins. I’m building this as a freelance Bagnall though, hence the addition of Dumb buffers. The dumb buffers came from eBay user “train_crash_models”. My current idea is to use a cut down and remotored Hornby/Dapol “Pug” to power it.

I had the two above RTR models lying about and, again I thought these would be perfect for a light railway. They’ve both been given a work worn weathered finish and I’ve added some detailing items, real coal, oil can, buckets & tool box. I’ve also added another J72 to the fleet as I’m not sure if I’ll use “Joem” that often as the above livery is a one it wore during early preservation. Although it did run on the Derwent Valley Light Railway like this…

It’s all well and good having a fleet of locos, but they do need something to pull!. I was fortunate to acquire a Ratio coach kit for a few quid along with a cheap Piko 4 wheel coach. Both are still work in progress models. But as the above shot shows, they are nearly complete and only require glazing, couplings and a very small details.

009 has taken a bit of a backseat recently. I’ve still had a few projects in this scale on the go so this next section is a roundabout from what I’ve been doing over the past several weeks.

There’s a lot of red paint in the above shots! My idea was to build a NG railway set in Cumbria/Lake District. The railway would’ve been built by the Furness Railway so I decided to adopt there liveries for the lines rolling stock. I do/did plan to add Furness Railway transfers & logos. But, I’ve yet to get round to that. The above tank engines are again based on Teebee’s Welshpool tanks but modified into tanks. These will run on the Kato 109 chassis once finished. I know not everyone is into freelance trams, but they offer a quick, easy and cheap way of getting something running. They still need final finishing off/detailing again, a project for a future blog post.

I recently designed a non-skirted version of my 009 Hudswell Clarke diesel kit. (Both can be found in the online shop). I got the ideal for the above model from the HC diesel used on Castle Wharf, an 009 layout also set in Cumbria.

The Furness Railway used a steam railmotor on the Coniston Branch, so this should be at home on a layout set in Cumbria. This is another Teebee model that I believe is designed to fit the Kato 103 chassis.

Another Teebee model is this freight railcar, another 3D print designed for a Kato chassis. Quite an unusual looking model and an interesting and enjoyable build.

I’ve always wanted a large powerful looking NG diesel and I think the above fits the bill!. This was another Thingiverse find by user “lkernan“. The model is a Tasmanian Government Railways X Class Locomotive, built by English Electric.

And lastly a pair of 3D printed balcony coaches. These are still in need of a fair amount of work including, interior, bogies, windows and passengers. But they’ll hopefully look the part one day!

I’m not sure when the next “Modelling Monday” will be posted but hopefully it’ll be in a few weeks time and not a few months!

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments about these models.
